How We Treat PTSD at Proverbs

There’s no single “cure” for PTSD, but with the right combination of support and science, people often see significant—and lasting—relief. At Proverbs, we help you regain control of your life through:

1. Psychiatric Evaluation & Diagnosis

Our licensed providers conduct thorough virtual assessments to understand your trauma history, current symptoms, and goals. Many people don’t recognize they have PTSD until they’re properly evaluated.

2. Medication Management

Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs and SNRIs, are commonly used to ease anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts related to PTSD. We’ll work with you to find the right medication, monitor side effects, and adjust as needed.

3. Ongoing Support & Referrals

While we focus on psychiatric care, we often refer patients to trauma-informed therapists for CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)—two highly effective treatments for PTSD.

We stay with you for the long haul—offering regular follow-ups, medication adjustments, and direct communication with your provider between visits.

What Causes PTSD?

PTSD develops in response to trauma, but not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. Risk factors may include:

  • Severity and duration of the trauma

  • Personal or family history of anxiety or depression

  • Lack of emotional support after the trauma

  • Previous exposure to trauma (especially in childhood)

  • Biological vulnerability—differences in how the brain processes fear and memory

PTSD is not a sign of weakness—it’s your brain’s response to overwhelming stress. And it’s treatable.

Common Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD symptoms typically fall into four main categories:

1. Re-Experiencing the Trauma:

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories

  • Nightmares or distressing dreams

  • Physical reactions to reminders of the event (sweating, shaking, panic)

  • Feeling like the trauma is happening again

2. Avoidance:

  • Avoiding people, places, or activities that trigger memories

  • Refusing to talk or think about the event

  • Withdrawing from relationships or emotional connection

3. Negative Thoughts & Mood Changes:

  • Guilt, shame, or a distorted sense of blame

  • Feelings of detachment or numbness

  • Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed

  • Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or emotional flatness

4. Hyperarousal or Reactivity:

  • Trouble sleeping or frequent nightmares

  • Irritability, anger, or sudden outbursts

  • Hypervigilance—always on edge or scanning for danger

  • Being easily startled or reactive

Symptoms must last longer than one month and interfere with your daily functioning to meet diagnostic criteria—but even early signs are a good reason to reach out.

What Is PTSD?

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. This could include:

  • Military combat

  • Physical or sexual assault

  • Serious accidents or natural disasters

  • Childhood abuse

  • Sudden loss of a loved one

  • Life-threatening experiences

While it’s normal to feel shaken after trauma, PTSD symptoms persist—often for months or years—disrupting your ability to feel safe, connected, or emotionally stable. Many people don’t realize their symptoms stem from PTSD until they begin to affect daily life.
